On September 11, 2001, the twin
towers of the "World Trade Center" in
New York City were destroyed by
terrorists. Before it was destroyed, the New York World Trade Center was one of hundreds of
World Trade Centers in cities all over the globe, all of which belong to the World Trade
Centers Association. More than a building or an organization, a World Trade Center brings
together business government agencies involved in international trade, provides essential trade
services, and stimulates the economy of the region it serves. The September 11th attack was the second noteworthy attack on the New York City World
Trade Center. On February 26, 1993, a bomb exploded on the second level of the parking
basement, and the resulting blast produced a crater approximately 150 feet in diameter
and five floors deep. However, the devastation of the September 11th attack, which used
hijacked passenger airliners as flying incendiary devices, was unprecedented. More than
3,000 people were killed in a matter of hours as billions upon billions of dollars
worth of damage were done to New York City and financial markets all over the world. The September 11th attack on the World Trade Center was a concerted effort which
included four hijacked planes. Two of these planes targeted the twin towers of
the World Trade Center, with one plane flying into each tower. One of the
other hijacked planes crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed into a
remote field in Pennsylvania as the passengers attempted to retake control of the
plane's cockpit.
