The search term "September 11" refers to the 254th day of the year (255th in leap
years), but the signifigance of this date in history was forever changed when four passenger
planes were hijacked on September 11, 2001 by a group of terrorists acting on
behalf of the Al-Qaida terrorist organization. Two of these planes were deliberately crashed
into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City (one plane into each tower), one plane was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania before it could reach its intended target. Casualties were in the thousands, and the United States responded by launching an ongoing military campaign which began with the invasion of Afghanistan, a country which had provided safe haven to the leader of Al-Qaida, Osama bin Laden.
