Virtually everyone who uses the search term "kazzaa" is looking for information about the popular KaZaA peer-to-peer file sharing software. Peer-to-peer file sharing software first came under scrutiny because of concerns about copyright infringement by the users of Napster's file-swapping directory service. The Napster system provided end users with a central registry for files stored on the computers of other end users. Using the Napster directory as a central clearinghouse, end users were allegedly able to share and download bootlegged versions of copyrighted music in the MP3 format with other end users. Proponents of KaZaA claim that KaZaA functions differently, giving the software developers no direct role in the file-trading process. However, record companies and movie studios have challenged this contention in court, successfully running at least one KaZaA developer out of business. And the controversy doesn't end there. Revelations about spyware in the original KaZaA software inspired the development of a hacked version, known as KaZaA Lite.

    A United States federal judge said that record labels and film studios could expand an ongoing copyright lawsuit against the Dutch companies StreamCast Networks, Grokster and Kazaa BV to include Sharman Networks, a company located in Vanuatu which purchased the rights to KaZaA software from Kazaa BV.
