A Guide to Search Results for "Napster"

"Napster" is the name of a controversial peer-to-peer file sharing protocol which first came under scrutiny because of concerns about copyright infringement by end users of the Napster system. The Napster system provided end users with a central registry for files stored on the computers of other end users, and using the Napster directory as a central clearinghouse, end users were allegedly able to share and download bootlegged versions of copyrighted music with other end users. The company which developed Napster is now defunct, but its legacy lives on in a variety of peer-to-peer file-sharing systems, such as KaZaA, Morpheus, and WinMX.
