A Guide to Search Results for "Shuttle"

Most people who use the search term "shuttle" are looking for information about the space shuttle. However, the term is just as relevant to the humanities, transportation, textiles, and the sport of badminton. To add to the confusion, Shuttle is used as a brand name for a wide variety of products, including computer motherboards, boats, and radio controlled helicopters; it is also the name of a daily newspaper. By far the most esoteric use of the term shuttle is in the context of the humanities.

The Voice of the Shuttle is a renowned humanities Web portal maintained by Alan Liu of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an esoteric reference to Greek mythology. According to myth, King Tereus of Thrace (one of the sons of Ares) married Procne (one of the daughters of King Pandion of Athens) and raped Procne's sister Philomela. To prevent Philomela from exposing him, Tereus cut out Philomela's tongue and imprisoned her. Nonetheless, Philomela wove a tapestry which told the tale of her violation, which the Greek playwright Sophocles referred to as the "voice of the shuttle."

Many airlines use the term shuttle to denote local routes and services, just as a host of other public carriers use the term shuttle to describe the routes and services that they provide, such as local ground transportation, passenger and freight rail networks of various sizes, maritime passenger vessels, and tourist packages. The term shuttle also refers to a device that is part of weaving and sewing machines and is used in reference to various textile products. In badminton, a sport similar to lawn tennis, the shuttle is another name for the birdie or shuttlecock, the ball of cork or rubber with a crown of feathers which is volleyed back and forth over the badminton net using long handed rackets.
