News reports of "unclaimed money" and "unclaimed property" occasionally inspire people to search for Web sites that contain information about dormant bank accounts, unclaimed insurance benefts, stock certificates, and other valuable property that has been turned over to various state treasuries in the United States. In most instances, the rightful owners are unaware that this unclaimed property is theirs for the taking; in nearly every jurisdiction, there is no time limitation for filing a claim. However, unclaimed property is often sold, with the proceeds of such sales being held in trust for the rightful owner.
