"Ultram®" is the name used by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical for its branded version of the generic drug tramadol hydrochloride, a centrally acting analgesic. The chemical name for tramadol hydrocholoride is (±)cis-2-[(dimethylamino)methyl]-1-(3-methoxyphenyl) cyclohexanol hydrochloride, a bitter, white, crystalline, and odorless powder that is readily soluble in water and ethanol. This drug is typically bound with inactive ingredients in 50 mg dose tablets that are prescribed to relieve moderate to severe pain, but it is also combined with acetaminophen to form the branded drug Ultracet®.
