A Guide to Search Results for "State of Washington"

The search term "State of Washington" is an unequivocal geographical reference
to the "Evergreen State" that effectively eliminates search results for the District of Columbia (i.e.,
"Washington, D.C.") and virtually any other noise that might be included in a
more general search for the term Washington, such as references to President
George Washington, after whom the state, the district, and various towns, counties, townships,
mountains, schools, colleges, universities, and naval vessels are named. What is now known
as Washington State was once known part of the Washington Territory,
which was formed in 1852 from the northernmost section of the Oregon Territory and
originally included parts of what are now the States of Idaho and Montana. When the United States
of America admitted the State of Oregon to the Union in 1859, eastern portions of the Oregon
Territory were annexed to the Washington Territory, including the southern part of what is
now the State of Idaho and a portion of what is now the State of Wyoming. In 1863, the
Washington Territory was reorganized to
create the Idaho Territory, forming the current boundaries of the State of Washington, which was
admitted to the Union on November 11, 1889 as the 42nd state.
