Her music reflects her love of hip-hop and the Portuguese music she grew up with as well as Brazilian and Jamaican dancehall music. A total of 25 musicians contributed to her debut album Whoa Nelly!, a collage of R&B soul, alternative folk, and Brazilian samba, which was released September 26, 2000. In addition to delivering vocals in English, Portuguese, and Hindi, Nelly played guitar, ukulele and trombone.
