The search term "movie" is unequivocal in that it refers to the media of motion pictures. This art form has been in existence in one form or another since the invention of the thaumatrope in 1824, a device which used the principle of persistence of vision to merge two images on opposite sides of a revolving disk. Since that time, the term movies has become virtually synonymous with feature films such as dramas and comedies that have a running time of approximately two hours. There is no one distribution channel for such movies, but the prototypical feature is usually designed for theatre distribution, at least initially, after which it is shown on "pay-per-view" cable networks, sold and/or rented in video tape and/or DVD format, and finally shown on broadcast television.
