On September 13, 2002, a parking lot security camera caught 25-year-old "Madelyne Gorman
Toogood" apparently beating her 4-year-old daughter Martha in a car that was parked outside of a
department store in northern Indiana. However, local police were unable to identify Toogood as
the woman seen on the film, so the tape of the incident was released to the media.
Consequently, Toogood turned herself in to the authorities and was charged with felony child
abuse. Meanwhile, the incident sparked widespread public condemnation of Toogood as well as
widespread scrutiny of the Irish
Travellers, the nomadic culture group to which Toogood belongs.
