When people use the search term "Irvine" to refer to a geographic locality, they are almost certainly referring to one of two localities: The incorporated City of Irvine in Orange County, California, which is named after nearby Lake Irvine and home to UC Irvine, one of the campuses of the University of California, as well as various other groups and organizations in Irvine that use the name Irvine as part of their own name; or the coastal town in North Ayrshire, Scotland, best known as the home of the poet Robert Burns. However, there are two other Irvine localities in the United States -- Irvine, Kentucky and Irvine, Pennsylvania -- and the search term "Irvine" is somewhat ambiguous in that some individuals who have Irvine as their first or last name are quite prominent on the World Wide Web, just as some very prominent groups and organizations have the name Irvine as part of their name even though said groups and organizations have no relationship whatsoever to the City of Irvine, California or the town of Irvine in North Ayrshire, Scotland. At the same time, because of UC Irvine's prominence on the World Wide Web, Web sites associated with the university tend to overshadow these lesser lights.
