The "Emmy Awards" are given out by two organizations each year: In September, the
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) awards the Emmys for prime time programs,
and in May the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) awards the
national Emmys for daytime shows as well as news and documentary programs.
ATAS is located in Los Angeles, and it is comprised of people who work in a variety of roles
in the television industry with 26 categories of membership known as peer groups. These peer
groups decide who the Emmy Award nominees will be in their respective areas of expertise whereas
the actual winners are determined by the entire membership of the academy. NATAS is located in New York City, and its membership is comprised of the membership of its
eighteen local chapters. In addition to the national Emmys, the local chapters of NATAS have
their own local Emmy Awards, and the International Emmys are awarded by a division of NATAS
known as the International Academy of Arts and Television Sciences.
