The Commonwealth Games are an international athletic competition held every four years between athletes from the 72 member countries of the Commonwealth Games Federation. The membership of the Commonwealth Games Federation is similar to the membership of the modern Commonwealth, a federation of 54 countries that gradually evolved out of the United Kingdom's imperial past. The first Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with 400 athletes from eleven countries participating and have been held every four years since then, except for 1942 and 1946. The Games have traditionally featured competitions between individual athletes, but team sports have been included since the 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
