The search term "barbie" is a little bit ambiguous, but most people who use this search
term are looking for Web sites with content featuring Mattel's trademarked Barbie
doll. However, some people using this search term may also be looking for the celebrity
Barbi Benton (who is best known for her romantic involvement with the Playboy
icon Hugh Hefner), the Barbi twins (i.e., supermodels Shane and Sia Barbi, best
known for their two appearances in Playboy magazine), or one of the many other
women in the world who have the first name Barbie. [Note the difference in spelling
with "Barbie" and "Barbi."] There is also a very remote chance that someone is looking
for Web sites with content featuring barbeques.
The Barbie doll has been a global power brand as well as a focal point of contention
even before it was first introduced in February of 1959 at the American Toy Fair in
New York City. Toy company
executives felt that Barbie could not be sold for a profit, but this objection was
overcome by Barbie's inventor and Mattel Toys' co-founder Ruth Handler who found a
similar doll that had been successfully marketed in Germany. Barbie's next challenge
was overcoming objections about her being too provocative. When these objections were
overcome, still more objections arose over Barbie's proper role in society, making
Barbie an ongoing source of conflict between traditional American women and American
feminists, with no end in sight.
