A Guide to Search Results for "Stock Market"

In its most general sense, the search term "stock market" refers to publicly traded investment opportunities, such as stocks, bonds, commodities, and futures. However, "The Stock Market" traditionally refers to a central physical location where brokers actually meet to buy and sell such investment opportunities. This remains true in modern business practice even though virtually all stock markets use sophisticated computer and telecommunications networks to overcome geographical boundaries. The notable exception to this general rule is the NASDAQ® stock exchange, which allows over 500 financial firms known as "market makers" to distribute their stock using a wide variety of business models and trading technologies.
