"Spider-man" (often misspelled "spiderman" or "spider man") is quite easily the most popular character ever featured in Marvel Comics. The character has also been featured in some very popular cartoon series, a not-so-popular television series, and a major motion picture which was released on May 3, 2002. The motion picture had a built in fan base, cultivated for some four decades, and it exceeded all previous records for box office proceeds.

Spider-man made his debut in a 1962 comic book which featured Peter Parker as a high school student who was imbued with superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Peter Parker's motivation to become a costumed vigilante came from a fateful incident where he refused to use his superpowers to help catch a thief. Shortly thereafter, Peter suffered some very serious personal consequences because of his refusal to get involved.
