"Phentermine" is a prescription drug that is used as an appetite suppressant. Its chemical name is phenyl-tertiary-butylamine hydrochloride, and it first received approval from the FDA in 1959. Since that time, it has been sold under a number of brand names, including Ionamin® (Medeva Pharmaceuticals), Adipex-P® (Gate Pharmaceuticals), Fastin® (King Pharmaceuticals for SmithKline Beecham), Obenix, Phentercot, Phentride, Pro-Fast, Teramine, and Zantryl.
