"Christopher Columbus" (1451-1506), also known as Cristoforo Colombo in Italian, also known as Cristobal Colón in Spanish, also known as Christovao Colom in Portuguese, was an Italian explorer who is widely credited with the discovery of the New World in 1492, a discovery which he stumbled upon while looking for an alternative trade route between Europe and Asia. Columbus made a total of four voyages to the New World, exploring the Caribbean as well as Central and South America; he died convinced that his discoveries were along the East Coast of Asia.
