Most people who use the search term "big brother" are looking for Web sites with information about the CBS reality-based television series called "Big Brother." However, this is a very recent phenomenon, and most likely a temporary one: The term has many other popular connotations.

The term "big brother" first came into popular usage when George Orwell used it to refer to an imaginary dictator in his classic novel 1984, a science fiction political commentary which painted a dark and dreary image for the future of mankind.
