The "Apollo 11" mission was launched by the United States of America on July 16, 1969
as part of the NASA Apollo Program, which was
dedicated to achieving President Robert F. Kennedy's goal "of landing a man on the Moon and
returning him safely to Earth" before the end of the decade of the 1960s. On July 20, 1969, as
the commander of Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon. He and his
three man crew were returned safely to Earth on July 24, 1969. Some conspiracy theorists claim that American astronauts never landed on the Moon. Foremost
among them is independent filmmaker Bart Sibrel, who has spent years trying to prove that
the Apollo 11 mission was faked. In a highly
publicized incident, Sibrel confronted Apollo 11 crewmember Buzz Aldrin at a Beverly Hills
hotel, demanding that Aldrin swear on a Bible that he (Aldrin) had in fact walked on the Moon.
Aldrin punched Sibrel in the jaw and ran away; Aldrin escaped criminal prosecution by virtue of
the fact that several witnesses came forward to support Aldrin's claim of self-defense.
