"Tupac Shakur" (1971-1996) was a controversial rap artist who died on September 13, 1996 in Las Vegas, Nevada after being shot by undetermined assailants in a drive-by shooting some five days earlier. The circumstances of Tupac's death remain somewhat mysterious several years later, even as his musical legacy continues to grow with the vast majority of music that Tupac recorded still being released for the first time years after his death. Even so, Tupac's musical legacy has always been overshadowed by his frequent run-ins with the law, including a significant amount of time spent behind bars, and his lyrical content has been frequently criticized as glorifying violence and degrading women.
